In the 'Advanced search' tab, you can specify whether you want to search in different specific metadata fields. These include:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Text
  • Publication date
  • Publication
  • Provider
  • Dataset
The current providers are GoPress Academic, het Elektronisch Nieuwsarchief (Electronic News Archive) and specific datasets from Twitter. The Twitter datasets consist of the Twitter profiles of several news outlets as well as selections of themes and profiles harvested from Twitter.

The second field in the Advanced Search tab allows you to specify if you want iCANDID to search for results that contain the words you typed by selecting 'One of the words'. The option 'Exact phrase' will give you search results in which the phrase exactly as you typed it appear. By selecting 'Starts with' you will not only search for the entered term, but also for words that start with that letter combination. For example, searching for 'parliament' with 'starts with' will also return articles with the term 'parliamentary'.

With the '+' symbol you can add lines to enter more search terms and the '-' symbol removes that line. With Boolean operators you can determine whether both entered search terms are searched for by indicating 'AND'. By choosing 'OR', you will get results that contain at least one of the terms. 'NOT' excludes the search term on that line from the results, so that you only get results where that term does not appear.

In an advanced search based on different fields that use an 'OR' operator that must be limited to results from one provider or dataset, it is necessary to put that provider at the bottom with an 'AND' operator.
